Interview with Guido Bardelli, founder at WhaleWashing

What is WhaleWashing? What is a car wash for ships?

Whalewashing is a straightforward concept to clean the boat hull quickly and in an environmentally sustainable way. WhaleWashing is a floating and self-propelled washing platform that operates directly in the water with a new and innovative technology that controls washing groups using only seawater and no chemical additives.

Why is it green? Also, why should I wash my ship regularly?

The growth of biofouling on the surface of the hull of ships increases its friction with water and therefore causes an increase in fuel consumptions as well as an overload of the engines, forced to exert a greater effort to move the vessel. If the hull of the ships is kept clean, the result is a doble advantage: lower emissions into the atmosphere and lower fuel consumptions. Moreover, consider that within a few years it will also be possible to eliminate the use of anti-fouling paints with a high content of biocides, highly poisonous for the marine environment.

Why is WhaleWashing innovative?

Because there is no such fast, absolutely green service in the world market, it is a high-speed and efficient washing service, but above all, it is an intermediate step between the mandatory ship inspections. We perform the cleaning of the whole immersed hull, with ship stops of maximum 2-4 hours. The enormous benefits can be seen immediately for the environment and the shipowners: less pollution, lower consumption and consequently more efficient fleet management.

Why did you come to Rotterdam?

Well, this is an easy question, the Port of Rotterdam has a long time old tradition, and today it is a pretty good example of innovation and efficiency among all the ports in the world. It is the most important and advanced seaport in Europe and moves 400 hundred million tons of goods every year. I cannot imagine a better place than this one to begin a great and exciting journey.

What prospects do you have for the future?

The future is full of a thousand challenges, but we are sure we'll have much satisfaction: our mission is to create a global network of ship washing facilities, to clean as many vessels as possible limiting their polluting impact on the planet. Let us remember that all the economies of the world use maritime transport for the shipment of goods; one hundred thousand ships are in service every day and 365 days a year. Saving only 10% of the consumptions of these huge iron whales would be equivalent to spare the emission into the atmosphere of million tons of carbon dioxide and to save thousand tons of fossil fuels.

WhaleWashing passed PortXL selection

WhaleWashing successfully passed the yearly selection to enter the PortXL program in 2018. PortXL is the First World Port Accelerator, present in Rotterdam, Antwerp, and Singapore. From September 2017 to January 2018, the acceleration program scouted one-thousand start-ups and scale-ups relevant for the sector. The search is global in order to get the best companies in Rotterdam. 25 promising start-ups and scale-ups were invited to participate in the PortXL Selection Days on 12 and 13 February to earn a spot in the 3-month acceleration program. During the Selection Days, the 25 companies had the opportunity to present themselves before 150+ port and innovation experts. Following the two-day event, the 14 companies that showed the most potential to innovate the port sector were selected on 13 February. WhaleWashing has been selected and Rotterdam will be the first port to host the new and innovative technology for cleaning the hull of medium and large vessels.
